New online course to help people leaders understand psychological safety at work

We’ve just added a new virtual workshop - Psychological Safety at Work - to our growing suite of courses designed to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. This is a short three-hour course that has been developed by highly experienced trainer, facilitator and coach Rachel Moore and aims to provide people leaders at all levels with an introduction to the concept of psychological safety and why it is important to create team cultures that enable employees to thrive.

Although sometimes confused with psychosocial safety, which is about managing hazards that can negatively influence mental health and wellbeing, psychological safety is about creating a workplace culture where everyone feels supported and safe to express their ideas and concerns, ask questions and admit mistakes, all without fear of punitive action.

According to course facilitator Rachel Moore, “psychological safety is a positive attribute that fosters a supportive work environment, while psychosocial risks are negative factors that can harm employee wellbeing and productivity”.

Based on her experience, Rachel believes thatpsychological safety is critical for individual and team performance and is a key factor that needs to be included when ensuring a workplace free of psychosocial risks”.

In addition to the facilitation of DiSC and units in the Manager Essentials Program, Rachel will deliver the new course through the TTC and encourages participation by anyone who leads or manages people, from frontline managers through to senior executives. Rachel says that it is important that people leaders understand how critical the environment that they create is for both their people and the performance and productivity of their teams.

We coordinated a successful pilot of the course with volunteers from a variety of Tasmanian State Service (TSS) agencies who all provided positive feedback. As a result, two session dates have been added to the course calendar for 19 October and 15 November 2023.
