The Manager Essentials Program (MEP) is an internationally award-winning Tasmanian program designed to enhance the essential capabilities of all State Service managers.

MEP equips managers (frontline, middle and senior) with the skills to manage, support and develop people, lead teams, and prepare for future management roles.

Over six months, MEP explores:

  • the importance and impact of emotional intelligence and self-awareness
  • how government operates, how it is funded, and how delegations and decisions drive operations
  • what effective people management looks like including navigating difficult conversations and the importance of performance management
  • how to create, reinvigorate and maintain positive workplaces with a focus on psychological safety and preventing bullying, harassment and discrimination.
How it works

MEP program

MEP starts and ends with a GENOS International Pty Ltd Emotional Intelligence Assessment. The 180-degree tool is completed at the beginning of the program and the 360-degree tool at the end.

This is a unique opportunity for participants to understand where their staff are most seeking action and support, how effectively this is being demonstrated through their own behaviours, and to gain valuable insight into immediate actions they can take to directly improve team culture, wellbeing, and relationships.

Program overview

MEP consists of:

  • Genos 180-degree Emotional Intelligence (EI) survey and induction
    • Time 1 report with feedback from participants and their direct reports
    • half-day workshop to introduce each other and debrief survey results
  • Module 1 - Understanding self and developing others: the reflective mindset
  • Module 2 - Understanding government and governance
  • Module 3 - Managing people
  • Module 4 - Creating a positive work environment
  • The Genos 360-degree feedback survey and virtual coaching circle
    • Time 2 report with feedback from participants, their direct reports and manager
    • A 1-hour virtual coaching session to debrief their 360-degree survey results

To support flexibility within the Time 2 process, participants may choose to attend a virtual coaching circle, opt out of a debrief if they are comfortable with their results, or request an individual session for consideration.

The program is designed to be completed in full, with each module consisting of:

  • a face-to-face workshop
  • a learning guide with pre- and post-workshop activities
  • a Manager/Sponsor debrief template

Participation in the full program is strongly encouraged, however, enrolment in individual modules is possible. Contact ttc@dpac.tas.gov.au if you are interested in enrolling in individual modules.

Learning outcomes

Delivered by highly experienced and specialised facilitators, the Manager Essentials Program provides participants with an understanding of:

  • self and self-awareness
  • the unique context of working in the Tasmanian State Service
  • how to better manage/lead, support and develop people, and lead teams
  • consistent approaches to creating positive work environments.
Eligibility and commitment

MEP is designed for new or existing State Service supervisors, team leaders and managers who have responsibility for the full range of management functions (people, budgets, program resources).

To participate, you must:

  • be employed by a Tasmanian Government agency
  • lead a team or hold a role with significant influence (e.g., project management, change management, senior team member)
  • hold any general stream band level or equivalent (excluding SES Officers)

Workshops run for either half or full days. Participants should expect to spend 2 – 3 hours per week on reading, planning, reviewing, and practicing new skills. Completion also requires input from your manager and direct reports for Time 1 and Time 2 assessments (approximately 20 minutes per person).

Cost

Full program = $1,500.00 (exc. GST)
Individual module = $400.00 (exc. GST)
