If you work in any level of government (federal, state service or local government) it is crucial that you have an understanding of the basic operations of government and its relationship to the public service.

This course will help you unscramble government and enable you to understand and perform your role in the public service more effectively. You will be provided with an introduction to the public sector environment and insights on how the state service interacts with and supports the government.

Learning outcomes

This course will teach you how to:

  • Understand how government works in practice
  • Develop an overview of the Tasmanian parliament
  • Summarise the Constitution
  • Describe federalism and the three tiers of government
  • Learn about cabinet, ministers and ministerial offices
  • Identify and describe the separation of powers
  • Unpack the complexities of the accountability and authorising environment
  • Outline your Individual responsibility and risk management.

This course is ideal for anyone new to the state service, those who would like to find out more about how their role fits within government, or anyone wanting to refresh their knowledge of the workings of the state service.

Greg mastersGreg is an engaging and energetic facilitator with more than 25 years’  experience consulting for government and community sectors, where he specialises in strategic planning, program evaluation and management review to help organisations change for the better.  Greg has an honours degree in psychology, a masters degree in management and has held a number of senior management and executive positions in NSW Government agencies, prior to establishing his company Nexus in 1996.
