IPAA Tasmania forum - 'Governing in a fake news world' with Dr Matt Killingsworth, Mary Massina and Matthew Denholm

Fake news 1

In the past 12 months, established liberal democracies have been rocked by ‘illiberal’ moments: in the United States, the election of ‘populist’ President Donald Trump; and in the UK, the referendum that resulted in the UK initiating moves to withdraw from the European Union. And in the most recent Australian Federal election nearly a quarter of Australians gave their first preference to parties other than Labor and the Coalition. All of this has occurred in an environment of 24 hour news, the proliferation of social media and growing support for democratic consensus through alternative means.

With all this in mind, this forum will begin with Dr Matt Killingsworth, Senior Lecturer in International Relations and Head of Politics and International Relations, University of Tasmania setting the scene with an analysis of the challenges for liberal democracies. He will then be joined by Mary Massina, CEO Macquarie Point Development Corporation, and Matthew Denholm, Tasmanian correspondent for The Australian, for a discussion on the impact on local issues and the public sector generally.

When: Friday 18 August, 9.30am to 11.00am
